Assessment Policy

This policy outlines the assessment principles, procedures, and standards maintained by Insight Institute of Further Studies in compliance with the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015.

1. Introduction

IIFS is committed to maintaining a robust and fair assessment system that meets the requirements of the Standards for RTOs 2015. Our assessment practices ensure that all learners are assessed fairly, validly, reliably, and flexibly.

2. Policy Overview

The assessment system at IIFS encompasses the development of assessment tools, gathering of evidence, validation processes, and continuous improvement of assessment practices. All assessments are designed to determine whether a student has achieved the required competency.

Assessment Requirements

  • Performance evidence demonstrating practical skills
  • Knowledge evidence through written or oral assessments
  • Assessment conditions that replicate workplace environments

3. Principles of Assessment

Fairness

IIFS ensures fairness in assessment through:

  • Making Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) available to all learners
  • Providing reasonable adjustments for students with specific needs
  • Offering clear and accessible appeals processes
  • Informing students of assessment requirements before commencement

Flexibility

Assessment practices at IIFS are flexible to accommodate:

  • Recognition of prior learning from formal and informal settings
  • Varied assessment methods tailored to individual needs
  • Multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate competency

Validity

Assessments are valid when they:

  • Require students to demonstrate skills and knowledge across different contexts
  • Align with the requirements of the training package
  • Include sufficient evidence for competent decisions

Reliability

Reliable assessments produce consistent decisions through:

  • Standardised assessment tools and criteria
  • Trained and qualified assessors
  • Moderation and validation processes

4. Rules of Evidence

  • Validity: Evidence directly relates to the unit of competency
  • Sufficiency: Enough evidence to make a competency judgment
  • Authenticity: Evidence is genuinely produced by the student
  • Currency: Evidence reflects current knowledge and skills

5. Assessment Integrity

IIFS maintains assessment integrity through:

  • Academic standards aligned with national guidelines
  • Qualified and experienced assessors with current industry skills
  • Version control of all assessment documents
  • Secure storage of assessment records

6. Safeguards

  • Trainer and assessor matrices ensuring appropriate qualifications
  • Comprehensive induction programs for new trainers
  • Model answers and marking guides for consistency
  • Regular calibration sessions between assessors

7. Validation

IIFS conducts validation on a 5-year cycle, with 50% of products validated within the first 3 years. Validation follows a risk-based approach, prioritising:

  • High-enrolment courses
  • Courses with significant industry changes
  • Courses receiving student complaints
  • Newly developed assessment tools

8. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

IIFS offers RPL for students who can demonstrate existing competency through:

  • Formal learning from other institutions
  • Non-formal learning from workshops and courses
  • Informal learning from work and life experience

9. Assessment Activities

Assessment methods may include:

  • Written assessments and projects
  • Practical demonstrations and observations
  • Oral questioning and presentations
  • Portfolio submissions
  • Workplace-based assessment

Assessment results are recorded within 10 working days and categorised as Competent (C) or Not Yet Competent (NYC).

10. Academic Misconduct

IIFS takes academic misconduct seriously. Misconduct includes plagiarism, cheating, collusion, and falsification of evidence. The process includes:

  • Identification of misconduct through plagiarism detection tools
  • Investigation with the student given opportunity to respond
  • Disciplinary action as per IIFS policies

11. Appeals

Students who disagree with an assessment decision may lodge an appeal. Grounds for appeal include:

  • Procedural irregularities in the assessment process
  • Denial of RPL without adequate reason
  • Bias or conflict of interest by the assessor
  • Failure to provide reasonable adjustments

Appeals must be lodged within 20 working days of the assessment decision. The appeals process is documented in the Complaints and Appeals Policy.
